Our dream and conviction was to establish a versatile and multi - faceted business, offering a range of different services. We are driven by sheer desire to be on the forefront of establishing enterprises that are vital to the betterment of people’s lives.
This has seen us pursuing key business areas whose existence espouse the quality of people’s lives and also has a direct impact on human livelihood. Our burning desire and sentient has seen us, pursuing financial services, property development then spreads our interests in hotel and tourism through investments and other areas.
Our judicious prognostications of the economic trends direct our enterprise into different business pathways in order to navigate perceived economic challenges that lie ahead of us and to remain relevant in the industries that we participate in.
This belief in diversification is informed by our desire to add value in different markets. This also has an extra benefit in dealing with market share issues and absorbing economic shocks for the group.

OUR HISTORY EXPLICATED
The Intrepid Group is a private limited company incorporated in Botswana on the 1st of December 2005. We carry an experience of over 15 years.
Ours is a beautiful story of humble beginnings. We started off very small and embarked on a journey of unchartered territories and we slowly grow our business into an empire that we are proud of today. What drives us is the desire to improve the quality of life for our clients.
The Intrepid Group is a conglomerate made up of various businesses which are either wholly controlled by the group or other businesses that the group has a significant stake in.
In 2005, Comfort Makubaro founded The Intrepid Group, pioneering personal financial management in Botswana. From 2005 to 2009 the main focus was educating people on personal financial management. In 2009, we broadened the financial services business by introducing insurance, financial planning, investments and other financial services.
Transition to insurance broker – In 2013 we expanded to an insurance broker. We broadened our services enhancing further the areas of investments. This has seen us advising multitudes of people.
We are glad that we have impacted so many lives in Botswana and abroad. On this front we represent three insurers which are Botswana Life, Metropolitan and Hollard. We understand that diminishing marginal utility is a powerful force hence our continued efforts to introduce new, exciting and better products and services to the market
Diversifying to property – Our property business has grown in leaps and bounds since inception in 2014. We have constructed and sold many single family houses in seven different locations in Gaborone. We are in the process constructing multi – family estates in three different locations for rental.
In 2017, we moved to diversify the group’s interest in hotel and tourism through investments, with a long term goal of operating a chain of hotels across the African continent and beyond.

INVESTMENT
We help our clients to understand investment in broad terms and make sure that your wealth portfolio is balanced between different types of assets.
We offer our clients a variety of investment products including life – insurance based investment products. These are products mainly for the low to middle income employees and they are premium based investments. This is because a lot of people do not have cash lump sum to invest.
The client’s investment is made in the form of regular premiums throughout the term of the investment. There are a number of variations on these investments and advice is offered according to the client’s investment profile.
These services are offered from an advanced financial advisory perspective in conjunction with tax planning, mortgage loan amortization, retirement planning, and estate planning etc.
Tax Planning
The recommendations that we make on financial products always take into consideration the product’s impact on the client’s tax situation but not in isolation.
We consider this in context, in conjunction with other features of the product. For example, contributions to superannuation are often the most tax – efficient way for an individual to invest, more especially to those employees who earn allowances and the higher income earners.
Therefore, we help our clients to choose appropriate products that can complement and improve their current tax situation. Again we take our clients through the process since it’s a highly technical issue and not all investments are tax efficient.

Off shore investment in a nutshell is simply investing in other jurisdictions where you are not resident in. There are a number of advantages ranging from favorable taxation on your investment to participating in more stable markets and stronger currencies as a result hedging your investment against the effects of the volatility of local currency.
There are a number of insurance based off shore investments that are offered to clients depending on the client’s investment preferences and appetite. These investments are spread across off shore fixed income securities, off shore stocks and interest bearing cash assets.

The most important aspect on retirement planning and the difficulty we face is in convincing the population that their current state pension provision is not adequate to maintain their lifestyles after retirement. Furthermore, that the current provision is inadequate to represent a realistic and acceptable cost to the taxpayer.
Their current provision is clearly inadequate for anything but subsistence living, yet many people are ignorant and resist the idea of boosting their pension through Free Standing Additional Voluntary Contributions, (FSAVC), which will not only boost their pension but helps significantly to lift the tax burden, especially on the higher income earners’ bracket.
This problem is to a larger extent accentuated by the fact that majority of the people are often financially unsophisticated. With that, it becomes difficult to convince clients to invest more in their retirement without clients thinking the advisor has ulterior motives.
There are many benefits of retirement plans and pension ranging from pension mortgages to protection against retrenchment, they can be used to pay - back loans in case of retrenchment among other things. We diligently educate our clients on this aspect since it is a highly sensitive issue that needs proper advice.
It is a fact, nonetheless, that it remains the prerogative of individuals to increasingly take responsibility for their own retirement provision, and they will need expert advice to help them navigate through this complex area of financial planning.

The Intrepid Group reiterates its wish to become a key real – estate player and create a platform covering the entire value chain. Our real estate business controls a significant position of our supply chain. The design, construction, leasing, management and maintenance of our apartments are done in – house.
This kind of integrated approach supports optimized productivity and maximized efficiency. This allows us to construct more, while spending less time and money and has a positive effect on our bottom line. This vertical integration gives us economies of scale as most of the work is done in house.

On our property business, we are trading as Gemstone Valley. Under Gemstone Valley, we are developing single family houses for sale and apartments which we lease out.
Since inception in 2014, Gemstone Valley has seen tremendous growth with almost 30 properties that were developed and sold and apartments that we lease out.
This has seen us building houses in most of the locations in Gaborone, with an ambition to move to other cities within the country and across Africa and beyond.
